The Social Media for Nonprofit Organizations LinkedIn Group reached 40,000 members today – a benchmark that took three years, 323 days, and countless clicks of “Flag as Promotion” and “Block & Delete” to keep the group as spam free as possible and on its trajectory of growth. Nothing kills an online community faster than spam (think Myspace) and LinkedIn Groups have plenty of it. That said, a 40,000 strong spam-free LinkedIn Group is a  powerful thing for both the group admin and those members who take the time to post and participate on a regular basis. Just beware the ocassional narcististic, self-proclaimed expert rock star of [fill in the blank] that wants to duke it out publicly over a 26-day comment exchange – it’s a complete waste of time and you’re better off cutting it short and “engaging” elsewhere. I only bring it up because it is a particularly, uniquely LinkedIn Group experience. 🙂

All that said, LinkedIn Groups have a built-in statistics tool that allows you to view or share the stats of any group on LinkedIn. To do so, simply go the LinkedIn Group > More > Group Statistics. I have inserted the screenshots of the stats for the Social Media for Nonprofit Organizations LinkedIn Group below. Pay particular attention please to the graph demonstrating it’s growth to 40,000 members and make note of when it hit the magic number of 5,000:
