By Julie Kennon, Director of Marketing at CharityEngine – the first voice-driven agentic AI fundraising platform for nonprofits. Ask a question. CharityEngine Copilot answers, then does the work.
If you’ve spent the past few years getting comfortable with AI, you’re probably using it to polish emails, summarize long reports, or help write a compelling grant proposal.
And we can all agree that AI has made many everyday tasks faster and easier.
But those applications miss what’s coming next. The next wave of AI isn’t only about answering questions or sharpening writing. It’s about getting work done.
It’s called agentic AI, and it will fundamentally change how nonprofits use technology.
What is Agentic AI?
Most of us think of AI as an assistant. We ask questions, and it gives us answers.
Agentic AI is different.
Instead of simply responding to prompts, it can understand a goal, develop a plan, complete multiple steps, evaluate the results, and adapt along the way, with human oversight.
The easiest way to think of it is this:
Today’s AI helps complete tasks.
Agentic AI helps accomplish goals.
That may sound like a subtle distinction, but it’s a significant shift.
For example, imagine asking ChatGPT to write a donor thank-you email. It will produce a draft in seconds.
Now imagine asking agentic AI to improve first-time donor retention.
Instead of generating a single email, it might identify first-time donors who haven’t been acknowledged.
Then it can determine which supporters are most likely to respond to a personal phone call.
Next, it will draft personalized thank-you messages.
It can recommend the next best action for each donor in that group.
Finally, it will prepare everything for your review and wait for your go-ahead to execute.
One goal, multiple coordinated actions. That’s what makes agentic AI fundamentally different from the AI most nonprofits are using today.
Why Agentic AI Matters for Fundraisers
The biggest opportunity isn’t that AI can write emails faster.
It’s that it changes the relationship between fundraisers and technology.
For years, nonprofits have logged into their CRM to find answers. They run reports, build lists, compare spreadsheets, and decide what to do next. The software stores impressive amounts of information, but people are the ones piecing it together.
Agentic AI changes that equation.
Instead of asking software for information, organizations will increasingly be able to ask it to accomplish an objective.
You’ll be able to say:
“Help me close this year-end fundraising gap.”
“Show me donors who may be at risk of lapsing and tell me what to do.”
“Create a stewardship plan for every donor who has increased their gifts this year.”
“Build a list of supporters who deserve personal outreach this week and explain why.”
Staff members remain in control, reviewing recommendations and deciding what happens next, instead of spending hours assembling the information themselves.
Your Data Determines What AI Can Do
As exciting as agentic AI is, its success depends on something kind of boring: data.
AI can only work with the information it can access.
If donor records live in one system, events in another, emails in a third, and volunteer activity somewhere else, AI can only see part of the picture. And it will guess what’s missing.
If you showed a new major gifts officer someone’s giving history and asked for stewardship recommendations, that officer wouldn’t know which events the donor had attended, which emails they had opened, whether they had volunteered, or who introduced them to the organization. Without that context, the recommendations would be incomplete.
The same is true for AI. It can work with the data it sees, but it can’t see into disconnected systems.
That’s a concern for nonprofits. According to The NonProfit Times, a 2026 survey of 800 nonprofit professionals found that 70% of organizations use five or more technology platforms, while only 5% have an organization-wide plan for AI.
The organizations that will benefit most from agentic AI won’t necessarily be the biggest nonprofits or the first to adopt it. They’ll be the ones with data their AI can trust. And AI can’t trust data in systems that have been glued together.
CharityEngine Copilot is the first voice-driven agentic AI fundraising platform. Ask a question, describe a goal, or assign a task, and CharityEngine Copilot understands what you need and gets to work.
5 Ways Nonprofits Can Prepare for Agentic AI
You don’t need to rush out and buy another AI tool. Preparing for agentic AI starts with strengthening the foundation already in place.
Here are five ways any nonprofit can get ready to use agentic AI:
1) Clean up your data.
If agentic AI is only as effective as the information it receives, common errors like duplicate donor records, outdated contact information, or incomplete giving histories will make it much harder for AI to recognize patterns and recommend the right next steps.
Quick win: Make database hygiene part of your regular operations. Merge duplicate records, standardize naming conventions, and keep contact information current.
2) Break down data silos.
Supporters interact with your organization in many ways, from donating and attending events to opening emails and volunteering. AI needs access to all of those interactions to understand the full relationship.
Quick win: Map where your donor data lives and identify one important source of supporter information that isn’t connected to your CRM. Determine whether it can be integrated, imported, or consolidated.
3) Capture the story behind every gift.
A gift amount rarely tells the whole story. The context lives in conversations, notes, and event history, and that’s what helps AI make recommendations that feel thoughtful, not generic.
Quick win: Encourage your staff to record every meaningful interaction in your CRM, not just transactions.
4) Start thinking in terms of goals, not reports.
One of the biggest mindset shifts nonprofits will make is moving from asking software for information to asking AI to achieve an outcome.
Instead of asking for a donor report, start with what you need to accomplish: who to prioritize, how to improve retention, who deserves a personal call this week.
Quick win: Before running your next report, ask what outcome you’re seeking. Frame your requests around decisions, not data.
5) Document your best fundraising practices.
Every nonprofit has experienced staff members who instinctively know how to welcome a new donor or re-engage a lapsed supporter. But what happens if they leave?
Write it all down. This strengthens your organization and gives AI clear guidance for supporting those workflows over time.
Quick win: Choose one recurring process and document it, step by step. Then repeat with another.
What Agentic AI Means for the Future of Fundraising
Whenever AI enters the conversation, the focus tends to be on efficiency. How much time will it save? How many tasks can it automate? But that’s not the most interesting part of the story.
Agentic AI gives small teams access to insight and strategic support that once required a much larger staff. A development team of two will be able to identify opportunities, prioritize outreach, and engage more donors without spending hours pulling reports and piecing together information.
None of this replaces the human relationships that are at the heart of fundraising; in fact, it just gives you more time to build them.
The future won’t belong to nonprofits with the most AI tools. It will belong to the ones whose AI has the most comprehensive understanding of every supporter.
About the Sponsor
CharityEngine is the only unified fundraising platform built to power the future of nonprofit fundraising. Unlike disconnected CRMs assembled through acquisitions and integrations, CharityEngine was built as one native system: donations, donor management, events, email marketing, advocacy, volunteer activity, and payment processing on a single platform that can act across all of them, not just report on them.
Trusted by almost 400 nonprofit organizations that have collectively raised more than $6 billion, CharityEngine helps organizations increase revenue, improve donor retention, and eliminate operational complexity. That same architecture now powers CharityEngine Copilot, giving nonprofits agentic AI built on a platform competitors can’t replicate through integrations. Learn more at www.charityengine.net.
